The Mainfranken Theater Würzburg is a four-branch house that offers productions and performances of opera, drama and dance as well as concerts of the Philharmonic Orchestra Würzburg. Every year, the house welcomes around 138,000 visitors to about 420 performances. The theater is located in the old town of Würzburg, in the heart of the city. The Würzburg Residence is just a stone's throw away, and the main train station is within walking distance.
With around 20 premieres in opera, drama and dance per season, the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg not only presents works of the classical repertoire but also realizes world premieres, German premieres and other rarities. A large number of symphony and chamber concerts, film concerts, baby concerts and galas complete the schedule. Besides cherishing contemporary theater and focusing on collaborations with renowned directors and guest artists, the Mainfranken Theater dedicates itself to the discovery of young talents.
Since August 2018, the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg is being renovated and extended without interrupting operations. A new venue with around 330 seats in the smaller theater hall ("Kleines Haus"), numerous new functional rooms and a completely new theater experience for visitors are being created. The large theater hall ("Großes Haus") and the existing building will also be modernised. According to current plans, reconstruction work should be completed by 2029.
